Chilean prunes export record to China

Xinhua Finance Santiago, April 15 (Reporter Zhang Xiaoran Yin Nan) Chilean Fruit Exporters Association statistics show that in the just ended 2022-2023 Chilean fruit export season, Chilean prunes (also known as "European plum") exports to China hit a record high, reaching 55,000 tons. Plum products, including prunes, have become the second largest Chilean fresh fruit export to China after cherries.

According to statistics, 70% of Chile's annual exports of plums from 2022 to 2023 were exported to China, of which 98% of fresh prunes were exported to China.

In Chile, prunes were mainly exported after dehydration in the past, but in recent years, the sweetness and color of fresh prunes have been loved by Chinese consumers. According to industry analysts, the success of prune in the Chinese market on the one hand is benefited from the recognition that Chilean cherries have won in China over the years, and on the other hand, it is also because the off-season fruits in the southern hemisphere have avoided the market competition of China's homegrown prune.

The popularity of prune in the Chinese market has opened up the imagination of the industry for it to become a phenomenon such as cherries. However, some experts in the Chilean fruit export industry remind that the prune market is relatively small, and the development should not be rushed, and the requirements of the Chinese market are getting higher and higher, and the most important thing is to actively protect the quality of products exported to China.
